A Canadian artist, born and educated in Romania, has dedicated his entire career to exploring Roman mortar as an artistic medium.
Since 1975 Catalino has created many large scale murals for public and private spaces, both indoor and outdoor, in Europe and Canada.
After many years of research and exploration, Catalino has successfully transformed colored Roman mortar into a complete artistic medium. It is now open to endless possibilities of aesthetic expression, and can be successfully applied on a variety of support surfaces. Colored mortar can now be used for any type of visual art work, of any scale and style, using an unlimited color palette, an unlimited range of textures, and absolute freedom of design.
Since 2001, Catalino has focused on combining colored Roman mortar with Fresco, a Roman technique of painting with watercolor on wet mortar.
The resulting artwork is completely unique. The palette is bright and powerful and the pieces have complex texture and relief and a three dimensional sculpture like quality.
Catalino's artworks are in public places as well as private collections in Europe, Canada and the US.
